New tachograph requirements – what changes for your supply chain?
From 01.07.2026, the next stage of the EU Mobility Package takes effect: the mandatory use of the intelligent tachograph (Smart Tacho 2) will be extended to commercially used vans over 2.5 t in cross-border transport. This change brings an end to the operational flexibility that has existed in this segment until now.
A fundamental structural shift in the market
The seamless, second-by-second recording of driving and rest times will have far-reaching consequences for the market for time-critical direct and special transports:
- Reduced vehicle output: Stricter controls lead to shorter effective driving times per trip.
- Extended transit times: Mandatory rest breaks require intermediate stops, driver changes or transhipment.
- Greater planning complexity: The need for precise and sophisticated dispatching increases significantly.
Impact on capacity and prices
The new restrictions will noticeably reduce the effectively available transport capacity in the van market. A shift of transport volumes towards larger vehicle categories or vehicles below the regulatory threshold is to be expected. Due to the loss of productivity and the associated additional costs, significant price increases of approximately 25 to 60 percent are anticipated in the 3.5-t segment. For extremely time-critical long-distance transports, this effect may be even more pronounced.
